# Why a rail is unavailable

> Your customer is approved but can't use a payment rail. Read the rail's status and reason in Banking Capabilities, and tell a rail that's on its way from one that isn't offered.

An approved customer is not the same as a customer who can use every rail. Each fiat rail has its own status per customer, for deposits and for payouts, and it only turns **Active** once a banking partner has set the customer up on it.

### 1. Open Banking Capabilities

Open **Customers**, click the customer, and scroll to **Banking Capabilities**. It lists **Fiat Deposit** and **Fiat Payout** by currency, with one badge per rail. Hover a badge to see its status.

### 2. Read the status

| Status | What it means | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| **Active** | The customer is set up with a banking partner on this rail | Nothing |
| **Pending** | The banking partner is still opening the customer's account on this rail | Wait. It turns **Active** on its own |
| **Unavailable** | No banking partner on this rail is open to this customer | Go to step 3 |

If a rail stays **Pending**, contact [support](https://dev.enterprise.moonpay.com/support.md) with the customer ID and the rail. The banking partner's registration needs a look.

### 3. Find out why it's unavailable

**With a reason.** When a check rules a rail out, the card's **Unavailable Capabilities** section lists the rail with the reason, grouped by currency. These checks run when the customer's latest verification is created.

**Without a reason.** The rail is not offered for this customer. The common cases:

* **The customer's region and type.** EU and UK customers get a USD virtual account only as businesses. See [Virtual accounts](https://dev.enterprise.moonpay.com/currencies-and-rails.md#virtual-accounts).
* **The rail itself.** EUR and GBP payouts over SWIFT are not offered. FedNow is only for customers onboarded in the US. USD SWIFT payouts to individuals depend on your account setup: ask your MoonPay Enterprise contact.
* **Your account setup.** A rail your partner account isn't configured for is **Unavailable** for every customer.

`_thirdparty` rails are separate: a first-party rail can be **Active** while its third-party variant is **Unavailable**.

## Do it over the API

`GET /api/customers/{id}/abilities` returns the same data:

* `fiat_deposit` and `fiat_payout`: the status of each rail, for example `fiat_payout.usd.ach`
* `blocking_abilities`: the reason for each rail a check ruled out, keyed by rail name. Empty when nothing is blocked

Subscribe to the `customer_fiat_abilities` [webhook](https://dev.enterprise.moonpay.com/webhooks.md) instead of polling. It delivers a full snapshot each time the customer's rails are recomputed, for example when a **Pending** rail turns **Active**. See [Ability status](https://dev.enterprise.moonpay.com/onboarding.md#ability-status).
